The Best Relationship Books Explain Everything Clearly

Readability is the first feature of the best relationship books. They belong in a genre which is popular because people are consumed with interest in affairs of the heart. Some read romances and others go for the pop psychology type of texts that offer solutions to the eternal question of how to get along better with the other half of the world.

In China people buy rhinoceros horn. In Africa they might buy a concoction in a second hand bottle, guaranteed to lure the opposite sex. In the West people buy best selling books written by experts with qualifications from American universities.

The important thing about successful books is that they are absorbing to read because they are clear and simple. Advice is often set out in lists. Each step in the list is explicated in clear language. Sentences are short, probably with fewer than fifteen words on average. One paragraph follows quickly from the next, so that readers do not have to struggle to understand the author’s meaning.

Philosophy, psychology and physiology can be deep and complicated subjects. However, for the sake of readability they must be made simple. It has been said that the mark of a deep and intelligent mind is that it can make the complicated seem clear. This is what excellent writers do.

In the hands of skilled writers banalities and truisms can be turned to good account if they can be dressed up in fresh metaphors and allusions to popular TV themes. They may be thought of as the raw materials of newly packaged texts, sparkling with clever phrases and images.

But there could also be some other interesting facts in the dusty cupboard of gender affairs. A classic novel written two centuries ago by Jane Austen could probably compete with the best relationship books because the narrative says almost all that there is to say on the subject. In one way or another pride and prejudice are woven into relationships. This is fascinatingly portrayed on screens in one film remake after another of the novel.
